The young Uktena again raises his hand politely.

"Yes. Perhaps this is more 'advanced class', but I was wondering if we could talk a bit about talens. Not in the making them sense, but in relation to spirits that inhabit objects. Awakening spirits, communicating with them, etc."

Walker ponders that. << In a general sense, things are as they are for a reason. If a spirit slumbers, it slumbers for a reason. Awakening sleeping spirits is much like awakening a bear as it slumbers for the winter. There may be a good reason to do it, but if there isn't, you shouldn't. >>

He inclines his head. << One could perhaps give a more detailed answer if you elaborated a bit. >>

Adam shrugs.

"Well, let's say someone gives you a stone and tells you they've awakened the spirit within. What do you do with it? Why is it more valuable than another stone? How long does the spirit remain awakened? Why would one do this? Why should one NOT do this? Does this make the stone a fetish? A talen? Something entirely different? Should we treat this stone with reverence?"

Walker considers the barrage of questions.

<< Should one treat a stone with reverence? No more or less than one would treat any stone with reverence, as part of Gaia. Whether the spirit slumbers or is awake, is it not due the same degree of respect? The stone is, to be precise, neither a talen nor a fetish; it is simply a stone with an awakened spirit. The spirit has not been bound to a purpose; it has not made a compact with Garou. The stone, likely, serves no function other than being a stone. >>

Another thoughtful pause.

<< That said, there are certain awakened objects that could be said to be talens, in a less formal sense. Certain awakened medicinal herbs may have stronger healing properties, for instance. While it would be possible to quibble over whether the term "talen" is appropriate, to most Garou, it would be irrelevant; the object functions as a talen would. >>

<< As to the whys, one can only say that circumstances dictate the proper decision. At times, it may be important to learn from the spirit of an awakened stone, or an awakened tree, or an awakened spirit of water. If there is need, and if the awakening is handled with respect, this is proper. If there is no need, or if the spirit is not treated respectfully, then this is improper; one's reputation with that spirit's brood will likely suffer. >>

Adam nods.

"Thank you ritemaster."

Its such a simple right that we are all tought at one point. . . Im a bit ashamed by my falure in this. this leas me to two questions. Would run a class on the simple rigts we should alll know as a refresher? second question is it a bad idia to atempt a simple right if you are unsure tou rember the forms coretly?

<< One will teach classes on these rites, yes. One would hope that the other Theurges of the Sept will also be teaching the rites every Garou should know. It is always wise to know the minor rites, and the Rite of Contrition. Likewise, it is wise for a pack's Theurge to teach his packmates, so that they may assist in the rites he knows. >>
